Strategy Icon

Building a proactive tax strategy

We look at your vesting schedule, investments, and life goals to find opportunities to proactively reduce your taxes now and in the years ahead.

Organization Icon

Bringing order and organization to your finances

We bring together all the moving parts—equity, cash flow, investments, and tax planning, so you know exactly what you have and no longer stress about taxes, diversification, or if you can afford the life you want.

Mistakes We Help Tech Professionals Avoid

When your wealth grows quickly through equity, decisions involve multiple variables and mistakes are costly. All the moving parts and taxes can trip up even the most intelligent tech professionals.

Exclamation Icon

Under withholding taxes on RSUs or NSOs

The default withholding rate is often not enough, leading to surprise tax bills without proper planning.

Exclamation Icon

Holding too much company stock for too long

When your job, income, and investments are all tied to one company, it can be risky.

Exclamation Icon

Staying in a high-stress job longer than you need to

When the numbers aren’t clear, it’s hard to know if you can afford to change jobs, work less, or retire.

Exclamation Icon

Ignoring the AMT until tax time

For high earners, you can accidentally trigger the AMT and face surprise large tax bills.

Exclamation Icon

Treating equity like it’s not real wealth

When equity doesn’t feel like real money, tech pros struggle to use it as a resource for real-life goals today.

Exclamation Icon

Making big decisions without modeling the tradeoffs

Big choices affect more than one line item, and the tradeoffs aren’t always obvious up front.

Common Questions Tech Professionals Ask Us

Do you only work with tech professionals in Austin, or can you work with me if I live somewhere else?

We work with tech professionals in Austin and nationwide. While we’re based in Austin and have many local clients, all of our relationships are fully remote. We use video calls, screen sharing, and a secure document portal to work with you wherever you are.

How much do I need to have saved to work with you?

We do our best work with:

Tech professionals who have accumulated investment and retirement assets of $1,000,000 or more. These assets can be in brokerage, IRA, 401(k), 403(b), options accounts, and more.

This minimum does not typically include things like the value of your home, personal property, or a business you own. We know this can be confusing, especially for tech professionals who may have a high net worth tied up in other areas.

If you’re not sure whether you meet the minimum or expect to in the near future, we’re happy to talk it through and help you understand how it applies to your situation.

➡️ Start by filling out our form to book a call with our team.

How do you charge for your services?

We charge an assets under management (AUM) fee based on your investable assets.

We do not offer hourly planning or project work. Instead, we work with clients through an ongoing relationship. That usually includes financial planning and portfolio management, plus coordinating the moving parts of your life (like taxes, company stock decisions, retirement accounts, and major goals).

How are you different from the work I do with my CPA?

Many CPAs focus primarily on tax prep and filing that looks backward.

As financial planners, we look at multiple years and the rest of your life.

Our team will focus on the full picture of your financial life beyond just your taxes and what changes we can proactively make now and in the years going forward to lower your taxes.

CPAs often don’t have the time or data to do this comprehensive planning across multiple years.

We also have deep expertise in navigating the complex tax and equity compensation issues that tech professionals face, like ISOs, AMT, and timing Roth conversions.

While we are not CPAs ourselves, we will work with your CPA to find opportunities and confirm they are a good fit for your personal situation.

Do you work with my existing CPA or estate planner?

Yes. We regularly work alongside our clients’ CPAs and estate planning attorneys.

Most CPAs focus on filing accurate tax returns year by year, and estate attorneys focus on creating and maintaining legal documents.

Our role is different.

We look at your full financial picture, your goals, and how today’s decisions may affect you over time.

When it’s helpful, we coordinate with your CPA or estate planner so everyone is working from the same plan. This can include sharing projections, clarifying planning assumptions, and making sure strategies are aligned before big decisions are made.

If you don’t already have a CPA or estate planning attorney, we can also provide referrals to professionals we trust. Either way, our goal is to make sure your team is working together so nothing important gets missed.

Can you manage investments in my 401(k) or help consolidate old 401(k)s?

Yes, in many cases.

If your current 401(k) plan allows it, we can help manage the investments inside the account. When direct management isn’t possible, we can still help you review your options and make informed decisions.

We also regularly help clients clean up and consolidate old 401(k)s from prior employers when it makes sense to do so. This can help reduce complexity and make it easier to see how everything fits together as part of your overall plan.

Whether it’s one account or several, our goal is to help you get organized and make sure your retirement accounts are working toward your bigger goals.

Do we have to move all our assets to Charles Schwab?

Assets that you want us to manage must be held with Charles Schwab & Company.

Your 401k and employer-based accounts may stay where they are.

Do you provide advice on crypto investments as part of the portfolio?

We may include a limited amount of crypto as part of a diversified investment strategy, when it fits your overall plan and risk tolerance.

That said, crypto is not a primary focus of our portfolios.

Additionally, we do not provide advice on direct, on-chain crypto trading, picking individual coins, or speculative strategies. We also don’t support DIY-style investing in which clients direct specific trades.

We work best with clients who want to delegate investment decisions, not manage them day to day. Our role is to help you build a thoughtful, long-term plan where every investment supports your bigger goals, not short-term speculation.

✅ If crypto is something you’re interested in at a high level and within a balanced portfolio, we can talk about how it fits.

❌ If you’re looking for help actively trading or selecting individual crypto assets, we’re likely not the right fit.

What does working together actually look like?

Financial planning can be new to a lot of tech professionals. Given the complexity of your financial life and all the moving parts, there’s always planning to coordinate.

If you’d like to see the step-by-step process for onboarding and becoming a client, check out our process page.

What’s the difference between a financial advisor and a financial planner?

The terms financial advisor and financial planner are often used interchangeably, but they can mean different things.

A financial advisor is a broad term. It can describe many roles in the financial industry, including professionals who focus mainly on managing investments or selling financial products.

A financial planner typically looks at your finances more holistically. This includes things like cash flow, taxes, equity compensation, investments, insurance, and long-term goals—and how all of those pieces work together.

A CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® (CFP®) professional has completed specific education, passed a comprehensive exam, and follows a fiduciary standard, which means they are required to act in their client’s best interest. CFP® professionals are trained to help people make coordinated financial decisions across many areas of their life, not just investments.

In practice, the biggest difference is scope.

Some professionals focus on a narrow slice of your finances. Others help you see the full picture and understand the tradeoffs before you make big decisions.

Our team at Archer Investment Management is made up of financial planners who are CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERS® (CFPs®).
